On Saturday morning at 10:00 sharp, during the elite workout, five members of the elite team walked in wearing matching apparel, bags packed, and eagerness in their eyes. For Nica, Macy, and Bailey, this would be another opportunity to prove themselves as they were regular invitees to the Developmental Camp held at the Karolyi's Ranch, recently named an Olympic Training Center. For the youngest two, Grace and Rebecca, this would be a first shot at illustrating their potential and their work ethic. At only 10-years old, this would be a very big jump in skill level and a unique chance to start down the path so many of their teammates were on.
Upon arriving at the Ranch, the girls all stayed together, showing up early for workouts, staying late for line-ups and discussion, followed by the typical homework, online conversations with family and friends, and then making sure they were rested for the next workout or the next big day ahead. The maturity of all of these 10-13 year olds is incredible... each making sure that they are taking care of themselves and always being there to help out a teammate.
Physical abilities was terrific... each besting their previous scores. The first workout was a 20-minute per event 'touch' of the equipment, helping to get them accustommed to the event and preparing them for three more days (2x per day) of workouts, with four formal verifications. As the days passed, the girls grew more and more comfortable with the clinicians, with the equipment, and to Martha Karolyi's watchful eye. Some areas needed improvement and were backed by awesome work ethic and focus. Other areas they shined, but were still given suggestions to make it even better or reminders that it would need upgrades to the next level soon. Overall, it was a great working camp, a chance to display great talent and showcase hard work, but also a excellent example of that Texas Dreams work ethic that so many exhibit.
Nice compliments around and lots of good things to return home with... getting back in the gym and back to work, preparing for the next camp, the next better verification, the next shot at their dreams.
Proud of you girls.
